Clinical Supervision is the process where employees are given room to examine, review, reflect, explore and discuss any work-related issues in a confidential, safe and supported space. It fosters the development and maintenance of the employees’ abilities as well as their professional and personal resilience and wellbeing. This in turn contributes to the maintenance and development of employer standards and staff retainment. Clinical supervision can positively impact the overall organizational culture. It contributes to improved communication, collaboration, and a shared commitment to professional growth and excellence.
What Clinical Supervision is not
It is not a space for performance management or led by management.
Clinical Supervision is well established practice within the allied health sectors and recently growing evidence has demonstrated its value with nurses and midwives. It is an extremely beneficial part of professional development, providing a secure, supportive space for growth, learning and reflection.
Clinical Supervision provides employees with a guided process to explore issues within their professional roles, utilising a range of activities and techniques aimed at giving each individual new ways to view situations, identify areas for improvement and provide a productive way forward as individuals and as a team.
Recent evidence has shown that when Clinical Supervision is offered, it helps to develop the individuals’ personal and professional skills in team building, open communication, conflict resolution skills and the ability to identify and manage issues related to their work. When this is part of practice, it helps to positively shape workplace culture whilst addressing ethics and evidence based best practice within the workplace. Ultimately resulting in a more responsive, secure workforce that can deliver better outcomes to the organisations’ clients.
There is great value in applying clinical supervision with support workers and disability providers of all kinds in the NDIS community where direct support is provided. Our in-house Clinical Supervisor is fully qualified and has immense experience both as a supervisor and supervisee in the medical and allied health fields. During her training she also consolidated her training within the NDIS space.
The benefits of Clinical Supervision are numerous, including developing a culture of positive change within an organisation. This occurs by developing the skills of workers and managers alike to improve their service, and support to clients. This in turn then leads to improvements to organisation practices, policies and service models.
Clinical supervision can be provided in a group setting, or one on one, via phone, zoom and face to face.
